| Richmond: The River City |
|
Richmond, nicknamed "The River City," is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The English settlers from Jamestown briefly settled in Richmond from 1601-1611. The city was founded in 1737 and became the capital in 1780. Many notable events took place in Richmond during the Revolutionary War, including Patrick Henry's famed speech, "Give me liberty or give me death," at St. John's Church in 1775; and the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, written by Thomas Jefferson in 1779.
During the Civil War, Richmond was the capital of the Confederate States of America, and several landmarks from that period remain in tact today such as the Tredegar Iron Works, The Virginia State Capitol and many more.
Today, Richmond is home to nine Fortune 500 and thirteen Fortune 1000 companies and is one of twelve cities that is home to a Federal Reserve bank.
News programs dated December 8, 2008, stated Richmond is one of only twelve cities predicted to experience healthy growth in housing through 2012. Real estate in Richmond continues to trend well, despite the dire circumstances throughout most of the country.
Richmond is also a major port city, conveniently located centrally on the east coast between Maine and Florida. The Port of Richmond provides service to northern Europe, The United Kingdom, Canada, Iceland, the Mediterranean, South America, Mexico and the Caribbean.
